Experience- & Movement-based Improvisation

Instructors

Haag (he/they) is a professional rope bondage teacher and runs the Ellipsis Rope Events Foundation based in Rotterdam (NL). He has hosted rope events ranging from international workshops, to performances, demonstrations and rope jams for more than a decade. Haag is passionate about photography, community work and teaching. His tying style is focused on safety, knowledge/experience-based improvisation, high-paced tying, dynamic movement, and creativity. He has a very technical approach to rope which is complemented by his dance background, psychology studies and various hobbies that incorporate fine motor skills.

Neya_Hive (she/they)  is a Prague-based rigger and model with a strong presence across the European rope community. She began teaching in 2018 at Subspace Studio, a home-based space for rope practice and learning. Since then, she has expanded her reach, regularly traveling and teaching workshops throughout Europe—most often alongside her primary rope partner, Kameko.
A lifelong learner at heart, Nëya continues to explore new techniques and perspectives from a wide range of teachers, always seeking to deepen her understanding of rope and connection.
Her work is rooted in a strong belief in the individuality and uniqueness of both riggers and models. Nëya focuses on offering practical tools for exploring rope, body, and mind, with every class tailored to the specific needs and dynamics of each group. Her style spans from precise, traditional techniques with many ropes to playful, minimalistic explorations.
Above all, Nëya’s approach to tying is about authenticity: staying true to herself and the moment.

Both Haag and Neya_Hive will be sharing insights and exercises from their experiences as improvisation-oriented rope tops. They will be switching during certain exercises but are also open to working with attending students during this workshop.

For whom?

The workshop is ideal for those who are looking to diversify their rope sessions and enjoy both the creative, conceptual and technical aspects of rope bondage. Participants should have experience with a variety of upper and lower body harnesses and at least a base understanding of upline management.

While creativity and personal exploration is the focus for all attendees, those at an earlier stage of their development will be able to focus on a better development of their technical skill, while those more experienced can explore a higher complexity of harness construction. Switching is allowed and encouraged as long as both parties fulfill the requirements mentioned below.

Workshop Content

This workshop presents a technical and experience-based framework for rope work that integrates structural principles, anatomical awareness, and somatic input. It focuses on developing adaptable, collaborative practices that support improvisation, functional clarity, and creative decision-making across a range of bodies, scenes, and contexts. Expect a process-oriented workshop with a high density of information and a lot of room for creative exploration. The following topics will be covered throughout this workshop:

Exploring one’s (neuro-)diversity

We will revisit the topic of neuro-diversity (as in our workshop last year) and how it influences the way we experience rope. Rather than assuming a single correct way to practice or experience rope, this workshop acknowledges that different approaches work for different people. Participants are encouraged to explore methods that work for them, instead of limiting themselves to methods that merely work well for others.

Experience- and Movement-based Improvisation

This workshop teaches experience-based improvisation and pattern construction for rope work, with a strong emphasis on safety, adaptability, and functional clarity. We begin with core principles such as tension distribution, structural reinforcement, and effective rope placement, establishing a clear understanding of what a tie does, how it works, and why it is built the way it is. These principles are then applied to anatomy- and movement-based harness improvisation, encouraging participants to move beyond repeating fixed patterns and instead respond directly to the body, movement, and scene. By borrowing structures, observing embodied feedback, and allowing movement—both conscious and unconscious—to guide rope placement, participants develop a more flexible, informed, and personal tying practice.

Taming a Chimera

Participants will learn to work with modular, segmented patterns suitable for floor work and (partial) suspension, designed to be adjustable to different bodies and scenes while supporting creative variation. Improvisation is approached as a learnable, experience-based technical skill rather than spontaneous invention. Using segmented pattern construction, we will analyze, modify, and design ties, clearly differentiating between anatomical safety, structural integrity, and functional application. This framework provides tools to evaluate tying decisions and outcomes, while emphasizing collaboration between tying partners as a foundation for safer and more effective scenes.

To the bitter end…

The workshop includes focused exploration of rope ends as functional and expressive elements. Participants will practice using ends to enhance structure, communicate intention, facilitate movement, and add visual or tactile detail to their ties.

Workshop Requirements
